Feedback Stabilizer for Audio Player Outputs

Reviewed by Jason Van Bergen on 5/18/2005

For a true audiophile music experience, many of today’s consumer-level retail amplifiers and receivers retain the deficiencies inherent to their circuitry. In particular, high-frequency aural oscillations can often result in positive feedback emanating from your speakers, making for an overall sound of distorted music that is unnatural from its original intent.

A simple method for eliminating such positive feedback from your audio system is through the use of feedback stabilizers for both your audio player (DVD or SACD player) and your amplifier or receiver. DaikOm is a small company that offers these very devices, which are essentially small, two-inch by one-inch black boxes of circuits containing the appropriate audio or speaker terminals to connect to the audio or speaker outputs of your system.

In order to cover a typical system, users will want to have the company’s “Model HR103” 6-Channel Stabilizer for Audio Player Outputs and the “Model HA103” 6-Channel Stabilizer for Amplifier Speaker Outputs. As their monikers imply, the two devices are designed to control feedback at the musical source (the audio player) and at its ultimate destination (the system speakers).

Our test systems included both mid-level systems (Onkyo 6.1 channel amplifier and SACD/DVD Changers) and lower-level systems comprised of various Home-theater-in-a-box and base-level mass-market Pioneer and Sony components. The range of systems to which the DakiOm devices were connected was particularly telling, as the feedback stabilizers enacted only small improvements to the higher-level Onkyo components, and massive improvements to the lower-end systems.

Indeed, the aural clarity that the two DakiOm devices instilled into the mass-market devices almost made a case for their overall use as serious music systems! This was undoubtedly the most surprising aspect of our tests, as we had not anticipated such dramatic improvements in bass, bringing a fuller, more resonant sound to various genres of music. Vocals and instrumental classical music also produced richer, fuller sound, clearing the trebles in the vocals as well.

Owners of ultra-high end audio systems may not realize sufficient added performance to their systems from the DakiOm products to make their consideration for purchase. However, for those addled with entry-level audio components and speakers, these 6-channel stabilizers are arguably the cheapest, quickest, and easiest means of upgrading the systems…the aural results are universally impressive.
