With its latest round of CD releases, Putumayo continues its dedication to an eclectic international slate of musicians and groups. Starting with “South Pacific Islands,” we travel to the vestiges of the lesser-known corners of the earth and celebrate tribal music-making from New Zealand, Easter Island, Papua New Guinea, and New Caledonia. Chances are most North American listeners will never make it to these far-off islands, and thank Putumayo for at least introducing us to their music.
Continuing the trend is “Women of Latin America,” another in the series of the company’s successful “Women of…” releases. Such solo musicians as Marta Gomez from Colombia, Lila Downs from Mexico, and Mariana Montalvo from Chile are the center-pieces of this eleven track album.
Finally, Putumayo’s “Blues Lounge” is not what you might expect from the title. The CD features leading electronica DJ’s such as Moby, Boozoo Bajou, Tangle Eye, and Little Axe, all taking famous blues tracks from the past and remixing as only DJ’s can. The results are interesting, unique, and surprising. Much of the same qualities describe Putumayo’s monthly slate of releases.
